4 Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring a Photographer

While anyone can just use the camera on their phone to take a picture, you want to make sure the memories of that special day are beyond Instagram-worthy. By hiring a photographer, you’ll be proud to display your photographs for everyone to see!

With that said, you don’t want to hire just anyone. There are four important questions you should ask prospective photographers before you hire.

4 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Photographer

As your special occasion gets closer, you will want to vet several photographers. When meeting with them, make sure you ask these 4 questions:

1. What is your style and specialty?

Generally speaking, when contacting a professional photographer, you will want to ask what their style is, but also what they specialize in.

Some photographers specialize in weddings and engagements, while others are focus on personal branding.

Also, you’ll want to ask them what is their photography style. Some photographers do documentary style photography, while others do artistic or traditional.

You can usually find this information on their website, but if you cannot access their website, it doesn’t hurt to ask!

2. Will the photos be color balanced and/or retouched before I see the proofs?

When you hear people complain about photoshopping in magazines, these techniques are part of it.

You will come across photographers who will take liberties and edit the pictures to make you look your best, while there are others who will consult you first so you can choose what edits you’d like.

3. What are your packages and their prices?

Usually, photographers will have different packages that will give you different add-ons. You will want to find out what the price is for each package and what is included.

Some packages will include soft copies (photos you can post online), engagement sessions, albums, or even framing.

You can also ask if they do pre-wedding events like rehearsal dinners, engagement parties, and even behind the scenes photos the bride and groom getting ready for their big day.

4. Logistical Information

Logistical information means you ask the basics (if they aren’t covered on the website or at the beginning of the meeting). These questions include:

  • When will the contract be delivered and when does it need to be signed?
  • How much is the down payment and do you take installment payments?
  • When does the balance need to be paid?
  • Do you have a refund or cancellation policy?
  • Do you and your assistants have liability insurance?
  • Is there a backup plan if you have an emergency and cannot shoot?
  • Can we request specific shots?
  • How will you and your assistants be dressed?

Final Thoughts

Finding and hiring a photographer requires careful vetting because not just anyone can pick up a camera and take great shots. You want someone who is going to capture the event and special moments so that you can reflect back on that day with fondness.
